Concrete Slab Volume Calculator
Planning a concrete slab project.
Bagged concrete is the go-to choice for small to medium DIY projects — from setting fence posts and building small patios to repairing walkways and creating garden borders. Our Concrete Bags Calculator takes the hassle out of figuring out how many bags you need, so you can buy the right amount and avoid running to the store mid-project.
Using bagged concrete offers several advantages over ready-mix for smaller jobs: no delivery fees, no scheduling coordination, the ability to mix only what you need, and easier storage of unopened bags. The trade-off is labor — mixing multiple bags by hand (or with a small mixer) takes time and physical effort, and the per-yard cost is higher when you factor in bag premiums.
To use bagged concrete efficiently, work in batches. Mix 2–4 bags at a time and pour each batch before starting the next. This helps avoid cold joints between batches and keeps the concrete workable. Have a helper handy for larger projects — one person can mix while the other pours and levels.
When buying bags, always check the production date printed on the bag. Concrete has a shelf life of about 3–6 months, and expired product may not cure properly. Store unopened bags on a pallet off the ground and covered from rain to keep them fresh.
